Sample Preparation
For systematical investigation on specimen like soil, rock, concrete, bitumen, geotextiles, etc. unique and standardized dimension and preparation methods are basically for comparability and reproducibility of the measured values. In the field of geotechnical investigation and civil engineering the following standards apply beside the specimen specification of the particular testing instructions: DIN 4021, DIN 4022-3, TP BF-StB A2, DIN 1996-2/3/4/20, TP Asphalt-StB T27, DIN 1048, EN 196-7.
Soil samples gathered in the fields by drilling and core cutting must be fitted to standard by cutters and knifes. Agitation, shaking and mixing devices serve to produce homogeneous substrate.
Bulk material, aggregates, granular and soft material of any kind are divided into same sized portions by dividing crosses and riffle-boxes.
Stiff material like rock, concrete, asphalt have to be cut by electromechanical or hydro-pneumatically drilling and cutting devices to receive a standardized shape. Different core bits, grinding and cutting blades are available. Jaw breakers for raw material and ball mills for fines are used for material preparation. With stirrers suspensions are dispersed.
